Jobs

As many university's still feel the effect of the financial crises, many have limited or no positions to hire new tenure-track faculty so I expect the academic job market to be difficult again this year. But a few people have asked me to post announcements. Here are some places that are likely planning to hire tenure-track faculty in theory-related areas.

Feel free to add other announcements in the comments.

Also watch the DMANet and TheoryNet lists, now collected in a new blog, and the listings at the CRA and the ACM as well as individual departmental home pages. Even if a place doesn't specifically advertise for theory, or at all, they still may hire so it never hurts to ask or apply.

Nevertheless finding a tenure-track job will be difficult this year. Should be a bit easier to find a postdoc position and no one will count it against you if you take a second or third postdoc to tie you over until the market improves.

  1. The UMD position should more properly be listed as "open" -- we are not specifically targeting crypto or even theory, though theory applicants were* welcome.

    * The application deadline for full consideration was Oct. 15.

  2. Northeastern University is hiring for a senior position joint in Computer Science and Mathematics.

Faculty Positions button near the bottom
    of the webpage.
The position is posted as #112788.

  3. The linked to Wisconsin job posting mentions theory, but many other CS areas as well.

  4. Why do you think nobody would hold multiple post-docs against someone? Won't they seem like past-year's product a few years down the road when they try for a tenure-track position against fresh Ph.D.s?

  5. If you do something good with your postdoc and get some strong results or broaden your portfolio you could be a much stronger candidate afterward relative to the new PhDs.

  6. UMD is advertising 4 positions (http://www.cs.umd.edu/department/info-for-prospective/faculty.shtml). The first three are restricted to non-theory areas and the last is an endowed position for senior folks. So where's this theory-compatible position hiding?

  7. The Wisconsin position is open and the UMD open position is for more senior faculty. The position at the University of Southern Denmark does seem to be legit, though. Thanks Lance!

If a location is not advertising, they also will not hire, so it doesn't help to apply. In a market like this, when people are feeling pretty desperate and suffering, they deserve better advice.

  8. Any ideas how to make the postdoc application process more efficient? There's no list of who's hiring, and (for people who are hiring) no list of who's looking.

Actually, its time to give up the delusion of landing a "tenure-track" position with a fresh Phd in TCS. A few years of postdoc experience must be considered a requirement rather than a shortcoming. This would bring TCS hiring more in tune with other areas of math (or for that matter other scientific disciplines) where fresh Phds (even very good ones) are not considered as "mature enough" for a tenure-track hire. Note that this does not prolong the time to tenure though -- as a tenure-track hire in math (with few years of postdoc experience) typically obtains tenure much earlier than one in CS or other engineering disciplines.

  10. Many institutions limit access to their online information. Making this information available will be an asset to all.
