I will celebrate American Independence Day in the country we declared independence from, and not for the first time. You see many European conferences and workshops around this time. You don't notice Independence Day at all in England, the English being more upset at their lost in Portugal in the World Cup then their loss in an 18th century war.
I'm rooting for Portugal to win against France in the semifinals, since I'll be in Portugal for the final game and also because they are playing the French.
Blogging will be light this week as Internet access is not that easy; the Marriott here charges 15 Pounds/day for wireless access, shame on them.
If you don't normally read comments, the recent post on FOCS accepts has generated a record number of comments for this weblog. Check it out and join in the discussion. Nothing gets the emotions up more than discussing the importance of various conferences.
So Lance will be in Europe, bypassing the upcoming ICALP conference. Lance also didn't blog on this year's ICALP acc list. Seems that ICALP is just not Lance's favorite, right?
ReplyDeleteNaturally. Didn't you know that ICALP actually stands for: "International Conference where All Losers Publish".
ReplyDeleteI think this is getting too far in arrogance.

ReplyDeleteWell, it seems like Lance himself disagrees with this view since he has a paper at this coming ICALP entitled "Extracting Kolmogorov Complexity with Applications to Dimension Zero-One Laws."
Would he bother to publish in that conference if he had such a low opinion of it?
Above all, I do think that it is a proper thing to do to refer to one's colleagues as "losers." We are all in this business to try and offer our modest contributions to (theoretical) computer science. Some of us are definitely more successful than others, but we all have a role, no matter how tiny, to play.
Sheer arrogance will lead us nowhere.
Yet another IDIOT who has problems with the French! It is amazing how someone like you (supposibly a smart computer scientist) can fall into the trap of stupidly repeating what an average ignorant american would say about France ... Truly arrogance makes people dumb!
ReplyDeleteMy arrogance comment was about the "All Losers Publish" thing; we had enough with the show in the comments on the FOCS post.

ReplyDeleteErrr... ICALP is in Italy, not France this year.

ReplyDeleteI think the comment was referring to the following statement:
"I'm rooting for Portugal to win against France in the semifinals, since I'll be in Portugal for the final game and also because they are playing the French."
So you are rooting for portugal? Too bad. Then keep publishing in ICALP!
ReplyDeleteFrance 1, Portugal 0. Now Lance will have to support Italy in the finals as they are playing against "French". Even I do support Italy but not only because they are playing against France.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly can we check out the comments on the FOCS post and join the discussion when that page has been removed?!
