Since the very early days of computing the inherent difficulties in software engineering have been pointed out on many occasions. One of my personal favorite classics here is Fred Brooks:
https://umich.instructure.com/files/884126/download?download_frd=1
http://worrydream.com/refs/Brooks-NoSilverBullet.pdfGrigory Yaroslavtsevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13047893775057278591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-6802870235349761162016-04-08T08:18:03.120-05:002016-04-08T08:18:03.120-05:00"until we automate ourselves out of a job&quo..."until we automate ourselves out of a job"

http://www.automaticstatistician.com/index/

"Computer science jobs will be among the last to go"

Many computer science jobs are routine and costly. There is a lot of incentive to automate them. Same thing is happening in other fields like law where people do not need paralegals to search for relevant legal documents anymore. The less exception handling and ingenuity a job has easier it is to automate. We will see machine learning advisers in finance and law pretty soon, much sooner than machine learning taking over the job of truck drivers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-41759732382418395582016-04-07T20:53:20.101-05:002016-04-07T20:53:20.101-05:00Computer science jobs will be among the last to go...Computer science jobs will be among the last to go :-)Moshe Vardihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11819931416190195559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-2016683210631233202016-04-07T15:33:01.835-05:002016-04-07T15:33:01.835-05:00I thought that Moshe predicted that computers were...I thought that Moshe predicted that computers were soon taking all jobs... wouldn't that include computer-science jobs as well?Daniel Lemirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01566622051558391310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-88363119855123223662016-04-07T14:10:33.680-05:002016-04-07T14:10:33.680-05:00The bubble alert has been around for at least 5 ye...The bubble alert has been around for at least 5 years (http://www.economist.com/node/18681576) and nothing happened. There is certainly a risk but this time around there are a lot more fundamentals in place and lessons learned from the previous bubbles. IMHO, as CS is finally establishing itself as a key player in almost every other field there are a lot of reasons to be bullish than before.Grigory Yaroslavtsevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13047893775057278591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-18321050247561515662016-04-07T10:00:17.748-05:002016-04-07T10:00:17.748-05:00I"m surprised enginnering has more people get...I"m surprised enginnering has more people getting degrees
then there are jobs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722233.post-36323881540302638552016-04-07T09:52:29.461-05:002016-04-07T09:52:29.461-05:00But the same BLS perspective was valid a decade ag...But the same BLS perspective was valid a decade ago!
