Theory Jobs 2012

The theoretical computer science job market has mostly settled so time for the annual spring jobs posts. I set up a Google Spreadsheet that everyone can edit so we can crowd source who is going where next year.

The rules

  • I set up several tabs (sheets), for faculty, industry, postdoc/visitors and students.
  • People should be connected to theoretical computer science, broadly defined.
  • Only add jobs that you are absolutely sure have been offered and accepted. This is not the place for speculation and rumors.
  • You are welcome to add yourself, or people your department has hired.
This document will continue to grow as more jobs settle. So check it often.

  1. I consider begining a PHD in theoretical computer science this fall. How is the job market in this domain ? What are my chances to find a good job after I graduate ?

  2. Define "good job".

  3. So far: 4 faculty positions, 12 postdocs, lot more industry (heavily underreported)---that looks like a really tough job market.

    Possible good job definitions:

good job #1: say <= 2+2 teaching load on semesters and top 100 (US News computer science ranking)

good job #2: say <= 1+1 teaching load on semesters and top 20 (US News computer science ranking)

good job #3: google, microsoft, good startups, etc

    1. As long as you're decently smart, you'll definitely find a good job as per your 3 definitions. You don't even need a PhD for a job at Microsoft or Google (though then your job will probably not be very research oriented)

  4. If that's representative of the current job market, it is pretty bleak. No?

  5. Probably it is not that bleak--not all the info is there.
I know of at least one person who is sitting on (at least) two offers.

Some of the places that advertised theory positions for this season and are not listed above:
Chicago, Purdue, Minnesota, EPFL (the entry in the table is from last year's hiring season), Berkeley, Stanford and MIT OR, ...

  7. Nice to see UCSD finally succeed after 15 years of looking.
No one has worked as hard as them to attract someone.

  11. This doesn't look like a bad year to me, 25 jobs in academia, 9 in industry (and I guess it's more), so why do you complain?
